Regulations for the Selection and Change of Advisors for Master's Program Students

Article 1: After registration, graduate students admitted through the examination process and those admitted through general examinations should proceed to the office assistant to obtain a list of faculty research areas. They should then arrange meetings with faculty members to understand each professor's research field and select an advisor. Afterward, they must submit the "Advisor Selection Agreement Form," signed and approved by both the selected advisor and the department head, to the institute for record-keeping.
Article 2: Postgraduate students admitted through the screening examination and general examination should collect the "Advisor Selection Agreement Form" from the department assistant within 2 weeks after the announcement of the results. After completing the form, it should be returned to the department office to finalize the selection of an advisor. If the selection of an advisor is not completed within the specified period, the department council will decide on a unified advisor assignment. Reserve candidates must also complete the selection of an advisor within 2 weeks after receiving the admission notice.
Article 3: The thesis advisor must be primarily a full-time assistant professor or above from the institute, and may also be jointly appointed by a co-advisor who holds at least the position of assistant professor within the institute. If the co-advisor is from outside the institute, the appointment must be approved by the director of the institute. Spouses or relatives within three degrees of consanguinity or affinity of the graduate student are not eligible to serve as thesis advisors.
Article 4: To maintain teaching quality, full-time faculty members may admit a maximum of three master's students each year.
Article 5: If the advisor resigns or retires, the graduate student must select another qualified advisor from the institute, and the original advisor shall continue to participate as a co-advisor.
Article 6: If either the graduate student or the supervising professor wishes to terminate the relationship for any reason, the detailed implementation rules are as follows, and they shall apply retroactively to all current students of the institute:
- If a supervising professor wishes to terminate the advising relationship, they must submit a written application to the institute's administrative meeting. The review result will be determined by the institute's administrative meeting and then notified to the graduate student. After the termination of the advising relationship, the institute will assist the graduate student in finding another supervising professor.
- During the course of their studies, if a graduate student wishes to terminate their thesis advisory relationship or change their thesis advisor, they must submit the request during the second semester of the first academic year (by July 31), and the duration of study must be extended by at least half a year. If the request is submitted during the first semester of the second academic year (by January 31), the duration of study must be extended by at least one year. If the request is submitted after the second semester of the second academic year, it must be reported to the institute's administrative meeting for resolution. After the resolution, written notice must be given to the original advisor, and all handover matters must be completed before it takes effect. The duration of study will generally be extended by two years.
- When graduate students apply to terminate the thesis advisory relationship or change their thesis advisor in accordance with these guidelines, any research results obtained under the original advisor's initial ideas, concepts, or guidance shall not be publicly disclosed or used as part of the degree thesis. However, this restriction does not apply if written consent is obtained from the original advisor.
- Matters not covered herein shall be handled in accordance with the "Guidelines for Interaction between Thesis Advisors and Graduate Students at National Taiwan University."
Article 7: These regulations shall be implemented upon approval by the Institute Affairs Meeting and shall take effect from the date of promulgation.
