Director's Message

By the fifth director, Shih-Jung Cheng
The Institute of Oral Biosciences was established in August 1997 and began enrolling master's students. It has now entered its 26th year and started enrolling doctoral students in July 2013. As a member of the School of Dentistry, the institute works alongside the Institute of Clinical Dental Sciences, undertaking the mission of developing basic research and teaching related to oral medicine.

Research projects
We currently have 7 full-time faculty members, including myself. The other six faculty members are Professor Bor-Shiunn Lee, Associate Professor Kuo-Long Lou, Associate Professor Han-Yi E. Chou, Assistant Professor Hsin-Han Hou, Assistant Professor Wei-Ting Kuo, and Assistant Professor Wei-Wen Liu. The latter three are young faculty members who have been newly appointed in the past four years, and they have brought new vitality into the teaching and research at the Institute of Oral Biology. The research and teaching of the full-time faculty focus on two main areas: one is centered on the development, physiology, microbiology, and pathological processes of oral and maxillofacial tissues, with a focus on translational medicine research in tumors; the other is the application of biomedical materials and materials science in the filling and repair of normal oral tissues, as well as the use of local nano-dressings combined with ultrasonic perforation technology to assist in tumor treatment, both of which fall under the theme of biomaterials research.
From the 107th to the 111th academic year, the institute's 7 full-time faculty members published a total of 68 academic journal papers, 29 conference papers, and secured 26 research projects. Professors Bor-Shiunn Lee, Wei-Wen Liu, Chun-Pin Chiang, Mark Yen-Ping Kuo, and Associate Professor Hsin-Ming Chen have collectively obtained 13 patents in Taiwan and the United States, marking the first step in bridging basic research with clinical applications, and will actively develop potential applications for society and industry. Professor Han-Yi E. Chou's research team received the 11th National Innovation Award in the Academic Research Innovation category from the National Biotechnology and Medical Care Industry Promotion Association.
Currently, we have 10 doctoral students and 31 master's students. According to a survey of 58 graduates from the Oral Biology Institute over the past five years, 14 (24%) are working in academic units (teaching positions, research assistants), 17 (29%) in the biotech industry, 3 (5%) are continuing their studies, 2 (3%) are in the dental-related industry, 2 (3%) are in public service, and 20 (35%) are in other fields. We are very concerned about our students' career development. Helping current students understand the future career pathway is an important issue. Starting from 2018, we have invited outstanding researchers from various fields, renowned professors in biotech-related fields from various universities, and alumni to return to campus to share their work experiences and career choices with current students. In addition to broadening students' horizons and increasing interaction between alumni and their alma mater, this also allows current students to better understand future job opportunities.
The main direction of the Institute's development is to integrate research in basic dental science, basic life sciences, biomedical science, biomedical materials, and digital technology, enabling deeper application and equal emphasis on teaching, research, healthcare, and preventive care. The ultimate goal is to establish a model of oral biomedical research and education that represents Taiwan. The short-term, medium-term, and long-term goals are described as follows:
Short-term goals
- To enhance the development of digital and AI teaching and research, we will apply to the Ministry of Education for "increasing the enrollment quota for master's and doctoral students" to boost research capacity.
- Collaborate with industry, government, and academia to promote the "Internship Program for Graduate Students at the Institute of Oral Biology," establishing pre-employment training channels to ensure that future work aligns with their expertise and talents.
- Accelerate the renovation of the oral biology research space on the third floor of the College of Dentistry.
In November of the 111th year, approved by the College of Medicine and the hospital, the renovation plan for the third floor of the Oral Biology Research Institute was passed, expanding the "Oral Translational Medicine Center Laboratory" of the School of Dentistry. - Establish the "Craniofacial Intelligent Medical Digital Simulation Center" to enhance digital and AI teaching and research:
In December 2022, the "A1 Project (Three-Year Plan)" of National Taiwan University Hospital, ranked first in Asia, was approved. The "Craniofacial Intelligent Medical Digital Simulation Center" was established on the second floor of the College of Dentistry to enhance digital and AI teaching and research. - In response to the trend of globalization, English teaching has been incorporated into the courses of our institute, and the number of sister schools has been increased to enhance student exchange and academic collaboration. Teachers are encouraged to participate in international academic activities and actively align with international research.
- Purchase electronic whiteboards, distance learning equipment, and other teaching-related devices for each classroom.
Medium-term goals
- Establishment of the "Oral Translational Medicine Center Laboratory" in the School of Dentistry.
- Establish a cutting-edge comprehensive genomic medicine research platform for special oral diseases in Taiwan (oral cancer and oral submucous fibrosis), and develop a platform for early diagnosis of oral cancer, molecular targeted therapy, and personalized medicine to enhance treatment efficacy and achieve the goal of precision medicine.
- Increase industry-government-academia collaboration, while striving for more resources both within and outside the university, to enhance the integration and effectiveness of clinical and basic research, promote international cooperation and exchange, and strengthen the promotion of distance learning, faculty visits, student exchange, and dual PhD programs.
Long-term goals
With the development goals of "digital, tumor, medical devices, and regeneration," the "Center for Translational Medicine in Oral Biology" was established. Based on the resources of the College of Dentistry and various related colleges and centers at National Taiwan University, it aims to promote domestic and international cooperation and exchange, aspiring to become a model for oral biomedicine in the Asia-Pacific region, and to enhance our country's academic status and contributions internationally.
Looking ahead, we aim to gradually improve our hardware facilities and increase funding to enhance research capacity, building a distinctive oral medical research with local characteristics. In addition to continuing to cultivate high-level professionals in oral medicine, we aspire to establish a unique research position for our institute on the international stage and contribute to the field of oral medicine.
